Roshan Datye Profile
Roshan Datye (Bedarkar) is one of India’s distinguished Kathak exponent and has been working for ‘Kathak’ in different capacities for more than 32 years. She has been known for her Graceful Nritta (नृत्त)and Sensitive Abhinaya (अभिनय).

She is indebted to her parents Krishnaji & Meera Bedarkar who identified a Kathak teacher at Nashik in those days and created a platform for all interested in learning Kathak at early age. Roshan had initial training in Kathak for 10 years under Guru Haider Shaikh at Nashik.

In 1978 Roshan came under tutelage of Kathak Guru Rohini Bhate at Nrityabharati Kathak Dance Academy Pune. She got deeply influenced by her Guru Rohiniji, from whom she received impulses to
develop her as a Disciple-Dancer, Choreographer and Teacher. Roshan rationally implements the nuances and the rudiments, which she has comprehended from Guru Rohiniji, in her Dance, Innovation and Research.
Over three decades she has been rising to the needs of Nrityabharati to shoulder secretarial/ administrative responsibilities besides Kathak Dancing. Her contribution in Kathak stands-out because of her coverage of different roles such as: Disciple-Dancer-Teacher, Performer, Choreographer, Artistic Director, Art Historian, Author, Phd Guide, Visiting Professor, Committee Member [Kathak Syllbus & Structure], Examiner, Resource Person, Thinker and Counselor etc.

Fellowship bestowed upon by Ministry Of Culture & Tourism, Govt of India, New Delhi for her Research in Interrelation of Contemporary and Traditional Kathak with the Ancient Dance Sculptures existing on North Indian Temples & Medieval Miniature Paintings.

In Roshan’s view
her kathak dance is an expression of soul, mind, pleasure & concern.

• Roshan personifies expressions and essence of graceful dance sculptures and miniature paintings with the help of Karnaas (करण) and her Abhinaya and shares this joyful experience with Dancers and Art lovers.

• She definitely feels that one can recognize ‘Stylized Gestures’ of Contemporary Kathak in Ancient Dance Sculptures.

• Through her investigations she explored similarity between Ancient North Indian Dance-form and contemporary Kathak which subsequently helped her to establish her own views about the tradition of the Ancient Kathak.
• Roshan brings new concepts and treatments to Kathak-presentation through her innovative choreographies and research.

• Diverse themes of her Choreographies and in-depth analytical study of Karnaas and Anga-haraas (अंगहार) have extended her vocabulary of combinations of body movements limiting them within the scope of Kathak.

• Roshan expresses her Themes and Emotions following the tradition but they appear distinct due to her own sense of aesthetics.
